The A.T.C. is the UK trade association for the specialist aromatherapy essential oil trade representing the interests of manufacturers and suppliers of essential oils and aromatherapy products.
Essential oils are widely available under various forms of labelling and packaging, sometimes with insufficient regard for public safety. Many are of poor quality, some are totally synthetic, while others are adulterated with cheaper oils or diluted and sold as "pure essential oils."
It was issues such as these that led to the formation of the A.T.C. in 1993 to act as the self-regulating and authoritative body for the UK aromatherapy trade.
As members of A.T.C. you can be assured that we are committed to consumer safety, responsible marketing and consistent high standards.
The A.T.C. has adopted a policy for the random testing of its members’ essential oils as a way of helping to maintain standards and confidence.
Members shall at all times comply with laws, regulations and guidance notes issued by Government or any other regulatory authority and shall at all times conduct their business with their customers and the public generally so as to uphold the good standing of A.T.C.. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action and/or expulsion.
The Medicines Act clearly states that no medicinal claims can be made on labels, promotional material or advertisements – including web sites – for products that have not been licensed as medicines. Essential oils cannot be licensed since they vary like wine, from crop to crop. Therefore no aromatherapy product may make remedial claims if it relates to a specific disease or adverse condition of the body or mind
